RSNO Programme
Music is the magic medium that evokes an emotional response in almost everyone. This makes it especially suitable for children who may be separated from their families and friends and who are in need of emotional support and stimulation. Yorkhill Children's Foundation funds a joint initiative between RSNO and the Education Unit within the hospital which enables musicians to visit and put on performances, hold workshops, develop the skills of staff and purchase musical instruments. Music in this setting can provide children with a positive way of coping with their illness and successful musical experiences can help patients regain a sense of control, independence and confidence.
Children's Entertainers
Based on the simple idea that a happier child is a healthier child, the Clowndoctors aim to improve the quality of life for children in hospital. Clowning, improvisation, music, puppetry, story-telling and movement are all brought to sick children. The Clowndoctors are professional performers who are trained to work with the children in this way and who tailor their activities to the age, interests and medical conditions of each child they work with.
Mobile X-Ray Unit
The Echo Trust have generously contributed £25,000 for a Mobile X-Ray Machine. As some children are too unwell to be taken to the X-Ray department, vital treatment can sometimes be delayed. With a compact mobile unit, the machine can be moved around the wards from child to child instead.
Research and Development
Yorkhill Hospital has a world-wide reputation as a centre of excellence. To maintain this, Yorkhill Children's Foundation recognises the importance of research and development and, this year, awarded a package of £100,000 comprising £40,000 for small grants (start - up projects), £40,000 for a Fellowship (MD or equivalent) and £20,000 for a Studentship (PhD).
Donations to specific wards
Many wards and departments within Yorkhill have a dedicated fund through which targeted and specific donations can be made. For example, if you would like your donation to benefit premature babies or children with cancer, we are able to ensure that your money will be used entirely for this purpose.

Welcome to the Movies!!
The monotony of hospital routine is extremely difficult for children to cope with and time can move very slowly, especially for long-term patients. To be able to watch the latest blockbuster film at the cinema with their families and friends would give them a wonderful boost and a well-deserved treat. This is the experience we are now able to replicate within Yorkhill, in partnership with Medicinema UK. We have created a fully-functional cinema within the lecture theatre, turning it into a dual-purpose facility. Through the day, the room will continue to be used for training, meetings and conferences but in the evening retractable seating will be pulled out, state-of-the-art surround projection and sound systems will be switched on, the lights will be dimmed and the latest films will be screened, giving children a special movie-going experience.
