How you can help
A brand new book on the history of the Royal Hospital of Sick Children, which will mark the centenary of the hospital on the Yorkhill site, is in course of preparation. In addition to covering the early history of the Hospital, which originally opened on Garnethill in 1882, the book will narrate its recent history during which there have been considerable changes and developments in child healthcare. The book will record the history of Yorkhill Hospital as a much loved Glasgow institution, tracing not only the medical advances made within the hospital, but giving voice to the children, parents and families who have come through Yorkhill, both recently and during the last few decades.

This book will be an interesting and valuable account of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children to readers throughout the west of Scotland. It will serve as a record of key events and experiences in the Hospital’s history since the idea of a specialist hospital for children was first proposed 150 years ago. All proceeds from the book will come to Yorkhill Children’s Foundation. Historians working on the project have been recording experiences by patients and their families. However, they would like to gather more personal experiences in order that the patient’s perspective is adequately represented in the history. In this respect, the researchers would be pleased to hear from past patients and their families who might wish to submit short written memories. There will also be scope to take part in informal recorded interviews of experiences.

If you would like to contribute experiences for possible inclusion in the project, please contact the historical researcher, Iain Hutchison at iain.hutchison@glasgow.ac.uk or, at Yorkhill Children’s Foundation, Kirsty Norris on 0141 201 6917 or by email at kirsty.norris@ggc.scot.nhs.uk
