Children and families can inevitably find it difficult to cope with the stress of illness, medical treatments or spending time in hospital. Through a wide range of projects, Yorkhill Children’s Foundation provides financial support to NHSGGC to enhance services that deliver a wide range of patient and family support to help those families cope with their difficult and somewhat stressful circumstances. We do not accept applications directly from patients or families.
Since it’s inception in 2001, Yorkhill Children’s Foundation has funded a number of child and family support projects. A few of these include:
- Funding towards the production of patient information leaflets on different support services for patients and their families managing acute pain, behavioural difficulties, and support for children with siblings in hospital.
- Two new iPads containing special software and programs to help children who are ventilated to communicate, as often they will find it difficult to converse effectively with staff and family members whilst in hospital.
- Recognising the importance of effective bereavement support at Yorkhill Hospital, Yorkhill Children’s Foundation provided funding for staff bereavement training to improve and strengthen the service offered to families who have very sadly lost a baby or child.
- Having a child in hospital can be one of the most stressful times in the life of a parent. Often, many days are spent by their child’s bedside with little or no rest. Yorkhill Children’s Foundation provides funding so that a complementary therapy service can be offered to parents and carers allowing them to take time out to relax and get a little relief from their circumstances. One mum said “The most relaxing hour I’ve had by far in the past five weeks that my daughter has been in hospital.”
- Yorkhill Children’s Foundation provides funds to the hospital Family Support Service to help families in need to meet the additional costs incurred when they have a child in hospital for an extended period of time. Travel expenses may be met or additional costs covered when a family suddenly finds themselves in hospital in emergency situations.
