Music is a magic medium that evokes an emotional response in almost everyone. This makes it especially suitable for children who may be separated from their families and friends and who are in need of emotional support and stimulation. Yorkhill Children's Foundation funds a joint initiative between the RSNO and the hospital’s Education Unit which enables musicians to visit and put on performances, hold workshops, develop the skills of staff and purchase musical instruments. Music in this setting can provide children with a positive way of coping with their illness and successful musical experiences can help patients regain a sense of control, independence and confidence. The RSNO Programme also brings children together in a play and learning environment, therefore providing them with the opportunity to interact and develop friendships with other children on the wards.
